Programme 2011

The Pixelversity 2011 programme was composed of proposals from artists, makers, organisers and researchers who are Pixelache association members, and invited guest contributors. The events also offered a meeting point for the local Pixelache scene outside the festival period, and an opportunity to check out partner activity in Kemiönsaari/Kimitoön, Tampere and Tallinn. 11.2011: INTRODUCING FOR 2012: SOCIAL IDENTITY, AUGMENTED REALITY & VIRTUALITY / TRASH LAB

DAVE GRIFFITHS PRESENTS NAKED ON PLUTO / VIRTUALITY STUDY GROUP

Naked on Pluto is an open source, multiplayer online facebook game which serves as the focus for a wider examination of online privacy via a blog, interviews, public events and lectures. The project was developed during a shared residency at NIMk, BALTAN Laboratories and Piksel, between June and November 2010, by Dave Griffiths, Aymeric Mansoux and Marloes de Valk. This session also introduces the 'Social Identity, Augmented Reality & Virtuality' Study Group, initiated by Owen Kelly, which will explore over the next year: Digital tools, interfaces between public / private, personal / social & real / virtual. >> MORE INFORMATION

MAKER CONTRIBUTION TO MEGAPOLIS2026

Megapolis 2026 Energetic cities is an urban festival which looks for urban solutions to environmental problems, It is organised by environmental organization Dodo with its partners. Dodo believes that a low energy life is not just about giving things up, it is about searching for and finding new and better ways to live. During this project-event space the following associations will demo different prototypes and discuss the relationship between art and energy: Kokeellisen electroniikan seura (Koelse), from Helsinki who build instruments from recycled electronics, MIM project from Tallinn, who have been producing their own energy for theatre, and also Kodinkonemusiikin ystävät (Kokomys) from Turku who make music with hacked household appliances. >> MORE INFORMATION 09.2011: EESTI OUTREACH & OPEN DESIGN PEDAGOGY

OPEN P2P DESIGN: HOW TO CO-DESIGN AN OPEN DESIGN COMMUNITY, LED BY MASSIMO MENICHINELLI

Kerros/Floor), Helsinki Event organisers: Massimo Menichinelli. Two public presentations on two Fridays, and a sign-up workshop for makers, practitioners and other specialists on Saturdays related to open design, and sharing with community involvement. Workshop includes version-control systems, community analysis developing open p2p design process & product design. Led by international expert Massimo Menichielli, also currently doctoral student of Aalto University School of Art and Design. There will be a fee to attend the workshop sessions (30/50€) although the public lectures are free. This event is promoted also in Plektrum Festival in Tallinn, with several supported places for Estonian participants. >> MORE INFORMATION

SEMINAR AT PLEKTRUM FESTIVAL: LEARNING AND NETWORKING AROUND THE EASTERN BALTIC SEA

This seminar event introduces the Pixelversity programme in Plektrum Festival in Tallinn, seeking new connections and strengthening friendships across the Gulf of Finland. The future proposal for the Pixelversity 2012 programme will be publically released, which focuses on network culture exchange between Estonia, Russia and Finland. Coop Camp

Coop Camp was a trans-disciplinary weekend of events that aimed to connect the non-formal (and cultural) practices of cooperation in Pirkkanmaa and wider Finland, with the more formal organisational and academic cooperative research, including the network cultural scenes of Pispala Kulttuuriyhdistys and Pixelache Helsinki. For those who joined this ‘tietotalkoot’, it was a co-operative camp that gathered not only Finnish perspectives, but those of a more international nature. The Saturday Coop Camp event will take an open organisational style: Instead of pre-selecting all presentations, we encourage certain people to come, as well as make open call for those to turn up on day to share their ideas, perspectives, processes of cooperation, according to the Unconference/BarCamp model. Molly Scott Cato presents Green Economics

Molly Scott Cato shared the topic of Green Economics with a local audience of researchers and activists. While visiting Finland as a key note speaker at the ICA2011 Conference in Mikkeli, Molly Scott Cato presented and debated her economic position. Demos Helsinki researchers and other participants attending helped to introduce the local context and debate on the subject to her. This unconference event was a meeting of local, regional or international practitioners and organisers in the Estonian countryside (35km from Tallinn) to address the pressing topic of art & energy sustainability in cultural production. KALLIO EXPEDITION: USES AND ABUSES OF PUBLIC SPACE

Workshop organiser: Jon Irigoyen This expedition/workshop by artist Otto Karvonen and artist-curator Jon Irigoyen is focusing on Kallio, a neighbourhood that is undergoing a process of change, from a traditional working class neighbourhood into a new centre of creative culture.
