The food system is not a chain as it is usually referred to, rather, it could be described as consisting of a multitude of interdependent cycles. Problematic issues with the prevailing food system have become increasingly publicised in recent years. Pollution in the Baltic Sea, the horse meat scandal, and animal welfare issues are just the tip of the iceberg. The response from food activists and also the general public has been a call for a more transparent food system.

Aquaponics technologycombines fish farming and aquaculture, creating favourable conditions for growing plants without soil, in a system where nutrients and bacterial flora naturally arise into the water.
Aquaponics is a powerful and easy-to-care-growing process for food plants and fish. By adding worm composting into the loop, we can achieve an almost closed-loop growing system. The method is based on the efficient recycling of nutrients: fish live in an aquarium, eating worms; fish feces feed the bacterial flora, which converts the nutrients into food plants suitable for consumption....
Lorenzo apprenticed inDario Cecchini, and worked atFeather and Bone, an artigianal free range butcher shop in Australia where sustainability is priority. Lorenzo has great ideas, come learn hand-made sausage skills and talk to Lorenzo about his experience as a butcher.
Join this ongoing workshop to learn about the benefits of vermicomposting and how to start your own. Aimo Turunen from Kiteen Mato ja Multa Oy will tell us about the most crucial parts in successful vermicomposting. For example, did you know it takes about a month for a new vermicompost to really get going? Also, you shouldn’t put animal producsts (milk, meat) in your vermicompost since they are harmful for the worms and will make your compost stink. Plant-based products are ideal nutrition for worms. Plant fibre-based bedding in the vermicompost is an excellent way to keep the compost...
Four students of University of Helsinki will join Foodycle to give an ongoing workshop about edible insects. ‘We are four friends who started this project about a year ago. Our aim is to increase awareness about insects as food. We think this issue is important, since current meat production cannot meet western style diets’ protein demands in a sustainable way. This is why we believe that bringing insects to the western diet would be a step towards a more sustainable food system.’
The workshop does not require any prior knowledge of the subject, and is free for participants.
